Voltage Translator with Independent-Direction Controls - Fairchild FXL4TD245
Posted in ElectronicsOn Sunday, September 2, 2007
Fairchild introduced its FXL4TD245, a configurable 4-bit dual-voltage supply translator designed for both uni-directional and bi-directional voltage translation between two logic levels. The device allows translation between voltages as high as 3.6V to as low as 1.1V. The compact size of this chip making it ideal for space-constrained ultra-portable, consumer and computing applications.

The unique control feature of FXL4TD245 increases design flexibility by allowing designers to control the direction of each bit individually compared to typical configurations that control the direction of bi-directional voltage translators in groups of four, eight or sixteen bits.

Fairchild’s FXL4TD245 is the first translator to allow designers to choose the configuration that makes sense for their specific design rather than being limited by the translator’s architecture.
…This one-of-a-kind independent-direction control feature allows this translator to be configured for a wide array of designs, giving designers a level of flexibility unattainable by using previous solutions.
The FXL4TD245 is fully configurable: The A port tracks the level of the VCCA supply and the B port tracks the level of the VCCB supply. Both supplies are independent, allowing designers to select the translation levels and set the high side or low side according to their specifications. Other translator solutions force designers to use a preset high side or low side and to determine what the voltage needs to be.
Key features of FXL4TD245 Voltage Translator:
- Bi-directional interface between any 2 levels from 1.1V to 3.6V
- Non-preferential power-up sequencing; either VCC may be powered-up first
- Fully configurable: Inputs track VCC level
- Outputs switch to 3-STATE if either VCC is at GND
- Outputs remain in 3-STATE until active VCC level is reached
- Control inputs (T/Rn, OE) levels are referenced to VCCA voltage
- Packaged in 16-Terminal DQFN (2.5mm x 3.5mm)
- ESD protections exceeds:
- 8kV HBM I/O to GND ESD (per JESD22-A114 & Mil Std 883e 3015.7)
- 4kV HBM ESD (per JESD22-A114 & Mil Std 883e 3015.7)
- 200V MM ESD (per JESD22-A115 & ESD STM5.2)
- 1kV CDM ESD (per ESD STM 5.3)
- Power-off protection
The FXL4TD245’s ultra-compact DQFN package (2.5mm x 3.5mm) provides 65 percent board space savings versus TSSOP packaging. The FXL4TD245 utilizes lead-free (Pb-free) terminals and has been characterized for moisture sensitivity in accordance with the Pb-free reflow requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020.
